Tanner Hawkwood's Childhood

Tanner Hawkwood was the oldest son of a small farm family that ran afoul of Redlegs during the first invasion; his father and mother were killed, and his siblings hauled off to slavery in the North. Tanner escaped this fate because he was left for dead. Subsequently, he was sent to live with a family in a neighboring town. Apprenticed to a leather worker, (hence the nickname Tanner). Tanner preferred military matters and, surprisingly, showed an aptitude for book learning and mechanical work. He apprenticed awhile to a millwright, but disagreements led to the end of that relationship. Subsequently, he left the town at age 15, working as a caravan guard, hired tough, mechanic’s apprentice, and a stint in the Iron Bears mercenary unit.
