The Gaels

Called "Northmen" by others, the Gaels are the descendents of the folk who fled The Great Fires that befell The Land Across the Sea. The Gaels believe that they were the ones who maintained and preserved what is left of that ancient knowledge, culture, and learning.

The frozen wastes and islands northeast of Anglia are the home of the Gaels, and they are (largely correctly) said to be large, vicious, bad-tempered, and blood-thirsty. For outsiders, most contact with Gaels has come in the form of raiding, rape, and murder.

Red hair, light-colored eyes and pale skin are common amongst Gaels, though many other colors occur.

They speak their own language, which they call Gael.

The Gaels' society and government seems very bizarre to outsiders. They are divided into Clans, each of which is led by an elder.

A central leader, called First Gael, is chosen by the clan elders whenever a new one is required (death, disgrace, failure, etc). The Clan Elders meet at Mount Royal and agree upon a method of competition, in which they will all compete, with the winner becoming First Gael.

Amongst the Northmen, their is a higher than expected occurence of talent with air and water magicks, and virtually all mages are female. Abductions of mages, and the making of them into Slave Witches seems to be more common in the Gael Lands.
